1961 During this year, a man named Yuri Gagarin from the Soviet Union was launched into space. He became the first man into space. He also is the first man to orbit the Earth. His space transportation device was called Vostok 1. His full name is Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin and he had his first solo flight in 1955. He risk his life for space exploration. 1962 In 1962, America orbited the Earth. The American's name is John Glenn. John Glenn was selected to go into space and orbit the Earth. His space ship was called Friendship 7 and aboard Friendship 7, he orbited the Earth three times. His occupations are Astronaut, Military Leader, Pilot, and US Representative. He made history for America in this year. 1963
This was an extremely sad year for America. John Fitzgerald Kennedy became president in 1961 but was unable to finish his term. He was ASSASSINATED in 1963! He was killed in Dallas, Texas. He was assassinated in a car with his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and governor of Texas. He will forever be remembered 1964
The Beatles occupy the Billboard Top Five. The English rock band, The Beatles, are on the Billboard Top Five. They're songs are the only songs on the top five. They visited the US in February of 1964 for their US tour. They were happy for their success. They continued working on their music. 1965 The US was getting involved in the Vietnam War. But the students who attend the University of Michigan start to question the involvement of US troops. Then they start anti-war protests. Though it began small, it grew bigger when it got out. They protested for many years until Vietnam realized the end was not even close. They have persistence and therefore kept on protesting. August 28, 1965 On this day, all was fine in America. But it was a tragedy in the Philippines. A volcano explodes on Luzon, Philippines. 500 were killed but it didn't stop there. The lava flowed into Taal, Philippines and there 350 were killed. Altogether, 850 people were killed by the volcano in 1965.
