1956-1960

   November 22,1956
        On this day, there was a revolution in a country called Hungary. After receiving news of a safe passage from Kadar and the Soviets, Nagy left the Yugoslav Embassy. But he was arrested and taken to some place in Romania. The fighting mostly stopped. The resistance essentially had been DESTROYED. Kadar was going to move on with his plan to neutralizing dissent for a long time.

infrared remote controlThe television remote control was invented and velcro was introduced. The television remote control was invented for military use. The first was called "The Lazy Bone". It could turn the television on and off and change the channel but it was connected to the television by a bulky cable. A Swiss inventor and amateur-mountaineer was walking his dog and he had invented velcro. In this year, velcro was introduced to the US.

    October 4, 1957
 The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into space. It was the 1st man made object in space. It took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth. Sputnik in Russian is "companion" or "spouse" and yet they named it Sputnik. It marked the beginning of the US-USSR space race. It also marked the start of the space age.

During this year, Laika becomes the first living animal to enter orbit. Laika, a dog, aboards Sputnik 11 and is then launched into space. The Soviets did not create a re-entry plan. Sadly, Laika died in in space. Because Laika died in space they made a law against animal testing. We hope you rest in peace, Laika because you will forever be in our hearts.

  February 16, 1959
  On this day, the country Cuba became communist. But back then it was a state. It was influenced by the USSR. The USSR was a superpower at the time.  Also, Cuba receive help from the USSR. That was something Cuba could not ignore so in the end Cuba became communist.

March 1, 1960
On this day, the China-Russia conflict was over. In the 1950s-1960s, there was a border conflict between the two largest Communist states. They were on the brink of a nuclear conflict. Luckily, they worked it out. Now they are in peace and not fighting. The only country Russia is fighting is the US.

May 1, 1960
This day was a tragic day. For on this day a US U-2 Spy Plane was shot down. The plane was shot over the Soviet Union. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was an iconic Cold War pilot. He languished in jail for 21 months. On June 9, 2011 he was given a medal of honor and bravery.

ROCK-N-ROLL, DUDES! During this year, rock-n-roll took off. It became the most popular music of the year. The rock-n-roll stars became the most wanted stars to see. Their careers took off in this year. So rock on!
