Television was being brought into people's homes. Television took radio's place for entertainment, information, and other things as well. This was an important day for America's kids because kids would watch television for entertainment. The adults would watch for information and sometimes for entertainment. They would watch to see what the weather is like or what important event happened. This is historic event number 1. June 25, 1950 This was the day the Korean War started. Kim 11 Sung invaded South Korea because he wanted to unite Korea under a communist rule. The USSR supported this but was worried because World War 2 (WW2) just ended. This thus resulted the Korean War. America and Russia saw it as a way to fight one another. Also, the war was termed "police action" in the United States and therefore joined the war. China became communist and supported North Korea so they joined the war. 1950 Throughout the entire year of 1950, country music came into its own. Country music was the music of the year. Many singers became famous doing country such as Johnny Horton and Jimmy Dean. They were country music stars in the 1950s. From 1950 to now country music has made many people famous such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Tate Stevens. Country music has made history. June 27, 1953 This is the day the Korean War ended. The US threatened to bomb China. But a truce was declared by the UN forces and North Korea/China forces. The UN forces lost 94,000 people. About 1 million South Koreans and 2 million North Koreans died so neither side could claim victory. They never had a treaty signed but China, North Korea, and South Korea promised never to fight again. South Korea remained independent and North Korea and China remained the same, communist. May 17, 1954 A few years earlier, Oliver Brown tried to enroll his child, Linda Brown, in a white school but fail. He filed a lawsuit but the state court said it was fair. So he went to the NAACP and went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court listened to the lawyers of the African Americans. One justice died and had to be replaced. Finally after years of trying, the court was in favor of Linda Brown and the other blacks. 1954 During this year, segregation in school becomes illegal in the US. So Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream sort of comes true. Not "Segregation" but "INTEGRATION". Finally, a year when blacks and whites can be friends. Because of Oliver Brown and the African Americans, the schools were integrated. Somehow, segregation in school becomes illegal and it's a dream come true for all African Americans everywhere. July 25, 1955 This day was the opening day of Disneyland. Walt Disney had created Mickey Mouse and friends and all disney characters. He decided to have a Disney theme park and built Disneyland. All the television channels that day were focused on the opening of Disneyland. All families in America wanted to go there on the opening day and some did. This remarkable day was unforgettable. December 1, 1955 An African American woman named Rosa Parks sat on a bus that day. A white man came on board and there were no seats left. The bus driver told Rosa to get up and give her seat to the white man. She refused. She sat at her seat, not doing anything dangerous or anything at all. But she got arrested for not for not giving her seat to the man. She willingly went to jail all because she refused to give her seat up.
